Read the text and answer the questions, choosing the right answer.

19th-century writers in the US, whether they wrote novels, short stories, poems or plays were powerfully drawn to the railroad in its golden years. In fact, writers responded to the railroads as soon as the first ones were built in the 1830’s. By the 1850’s, the railroad was a major presence in the life of the nation. Writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau saw the railroad both as a boon to democracy and as an object of suspicion. The railroad could be and was a despoiler of nature furthermore, in its manifestation of speed and noise, it might be a despoiler of human nature as well.

By the 1850’s and 1860’s, there was a great distrust among writer and intellectuals of the rapid industrialization of which the railroad was a leading force. Deeply philosophical historians such as Henry Adams lamented the role that the new frenzy for business was playing in eroding traditional values. A distrust of industry and business continued among writers throughout the rest of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth.

For the most part, the literature in which the railroad plays an important role belongs to popular culture rather than to the realm of serious art. One thinks of melodramas, boy’s books, thrillers, romances and the like rather than novels of the first rank. In the railroads’ prime years, between 1890 and 1920, there were a few individuals in the United States, most of them with solid railroading behind them, who made a profession of writing about railroading – works offering the ambience of stations yards and locomotive cabs. These writers who can genuinely be said to have  created a genre, the “railroad novel” are now mostly forgotten, their names having faded from memory. But anyone who takes the time to consult their fertile writings will still find a treasure
trove of information about the place of the railroad in the life of the United States.

1. With which of the following topics is the passage mainly concerned?
A. The role of the railroad in the economy of the United States.

C. The conflict between expanding industry and preserving nature.
D. The railroad as a subject for literature.

2. The word “it” refers to
A. railroad
B. manifestation
C. speed
D. nature

3. In the first paragraph, the author implies that writers’ reactions to the development of railroads were
A. highly enthusiastic
B. unchanging
C. disinterested
D. both positive and negative

4. The word “lamented” is closest in meaning to
A. complained about
B. analyzed
C. explained
D. reflected on

5. According to the passage, the railroad played a significant role in literature in all of the following kinds of books EXCEPT
A. Thrillers

Read about Australian surgeon Victor Chang

Victor Chang is a Chinese-born Australian cardiologist and surgeon who was a pioneer in modern heart and heart-lung transplantation. He also helped develop devices, such as artificial heart valves, that could be used in heart surgery. When Chang was 12 years old, his mother died from breast cancer, which ignited his interest in medicine. In 1951 Chang’s father sent him to Australia. He studied medicine at the University of Sydney. In 1965 Chang left for England, where he worked in various hospitals as a cardiothoracic surgeon and continued his education. Five years later he began training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, US.

Upon his return to Australia in 1972, Chang became a cardiothoracic surgeon at St. Vincent’s Hospital. In 1984 he established Australia’s first heart transplant program at St. Vincent’s. The success rate of the hospital’s heart and heart-lung transplants was among the best in the world. Chang also helped develop low-cost artificial heart valves that were beneficial during surgery. These valves were then shared with hospitals in Asia and other areas.

In 1991, Chang was shot and killed by two extortionists who were attempting to kidnap him.

In his honour the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute was established in 1994, and it opened two years later in Sydney. In 1999 he was named Australian of the Century.

Write an essay about the given topic
SOS – Save Our Space. We need your help to clean up our city. What have you ever done or are going to do to keep it clean?
8 Ways to Keep the Earth Clean

Please consider the structure of the essay
Essays are organized into paragraphs. The first paragraph (պարբերություն) is called the introduction. It includes a thesis statement. The thesis statement tells the reader what the essay is about. It comprises an interesting opening, called a hook (հրապուրիչ սկիզբ, խայծ, որպեսզի հետաքրքրի ընթերցողին), background
that defines unfamiliar terms, and your thesis statement, which is one sentence that outlines your opinion or preference and your reasons.

After the introduction write the body of the essay. The body of the essay is made up of paragraphs that support the introduction. Each paragraph of the body discusses one supporting point or set of ideas for your thesis. It is important that each body paragraph has a unique topic. It should have topic sentences: key points supporting your thesis; explanation and example. It is better to have 3 body paragraphs.

The last paragraph is the conclusion. It restates your thesis and adds some general comments, predictions, or suggestions to your essay.

The environment
It’s up to all of us to look after the environment. So what can we do?

Use less paper. Paper comes from trees, and we need to protect the forests where trees grow.
Recycle things like glass and plastic. When we use things more than once, we help to protect our environment.
Turn off taps when you aren’t using the water. Water is a very precious thing, and we shouldn’t waste it.
Don’t throw litter on the streets! Always put your rubbish in a bin, or take it home and put it in the bin there!
Try to travel less by car or plane. Cars and planes produce fumes which pollute the atmosphere. And remember – that’s the air that we breathe, so we should do our best to keep it clean!

4 Types of Questions in English

1. General or Yes/No Questions

Common questions that can be answered with a simple “yes” or “no” are logically called yes/no questions. As a rule, this kind of question relates to the whole sentence, and not to a separate element of it.

For example:

  •         Do you like this country? –
  •         Does Edith know about your new hobby? –
  •         Can I call my sister? –
  •         Is it cold outside? –
  •         Are they ready for the trip? –
  •         Did she clean the room? – Yes, she did/No, she didn’t.
  •         Have you done your homework? – Yes, I have/ No, I haven’t.
  •         Will you buy that dress? – Yes, I will/ No, I won’t.

2. Special or Wh-Questions

A special question uses a certain word at the beginning of the sentence to ask a specific question. The questions words whowhatwherewhenwhyhowhow many, etc., are used to begin the question. We use special questions to get specific information. This implies that the answer will be more detailed.

  •         Where is he from? –
  •         When did you come here? –
  •         How did you meet her? –
  •         How many eggs do we need for this cake? –
  •         Whose children are playing in the yard? –

Note that questions about a subject (who? what?) have their own special structure; they do not require an auxiliary verb, we replace the subject with the question word.

For example:

  •         We go to the cinema. – Who goes to the cinema?
  •         The glass is on the table. – What is on the table?
  •         Most girls here wear skirts. – Who wears skirts here?

After the question words who and what, the third-person singular form of the verb should be used.

3. Alternative or Choice Questions

Choice questions are questions that offer a choice of several options as an answer. They are made up of two parts, which are connected by the conjunction or.

Choice questions can be either general, open-ended questions or more specific ones. If the question does not center on the subject of the sentence, a complete answer is needed.

For example:

  •         Does she like ice cream or sweets? – She likes ice cream.
  •         Where would you go, to the cinema or the theatre? – I would go to the cinema.
  •         Is he a teacher or a student? – He is a student.

However, when the question concerns the subject, the auxiliary verb comes before the second option. The answer is short:

  •         Does she make it or do you? – She does.
  •         Did they buy that house or did she? – They did.

4. Disjunctive or Tag Questions

This type of question is also made up of two parts, where the first part is a positive statement, and the second part is negative, or vice-versa.

The first part of the sentence defines the expected answer. If the statement is positive, a positive answer is expected; if the statement is negative, a negative answer is expected.

For example:

  •         Milena sent him an invitation, didn’t she? – Yes, she did.
  •         You aren’t going there, are you? – No, I am not.
  •         Ellen isn’t in France, is she? – No, she isn’t.
  •         David will come soon, won’t he? – Yes, he will.

There are also exceptions:

I am going with you, aren’t I? – Yes, you are.

You can’t say, “I am a great person, am I not?” That would be incorrect. Just remember that when the pronoun “I” is used, the tag is are/aren’t.

Tag questions are only used in conversational speech to clarify information or to confirm or refute something if there are doubts.
